Information will be available mid-May.

The Department of Engineering Education is excited to welcome you to Virginia Tech and the College of Engineering! This is an exciting time for you and your family.

We believe new student orientation is a very important component of student’s successful transition to Virginia Tech and an integral piece of orientation is class registration. Before students can finalize their fall class schedule, they must attend a class registration session. In this session students will meet the advising team and learn what they can expect as an engineering student, as well as information to help them succeed.

Please review the below information for details regarding what needs to be done "Before Orientation", what you can expect "During Orientation" and what should be completed "After Orientation". A list of upcoming deadlines for all General Engineering (GE) students can also be located in the right side bar.

Students will be able to add courses specific to their intended major when they attend the class registration session. Students will not be able to see their schedule or make adjustments until the class registration part of orientation. The below items are required of transfer students, regardless of their orientation date:

Transfer

Transfer Orientation is a one day program held in June. Students planning to attend must register through Hokie Spa.

During the second half of the day transfer students will attend a session hosted by the College of Engineering that will provide an overview of the college. Afterwards, transfer students will attend a mandatory class registration session and work with an academic advisor to determine the appropriate courses for their intended discipline.

Students will receive additional details through New Student and Family Programs.

First-Year (July)

First-Year Orientation is a two-day program held in July. Students planning to attend must register through  Hokie Spa.

General Engineering students, and any guests, will attend a mandatory session on Day One hosted by the College of Engineering, as well as a mandatory class registration session on Day Two

Students are randomly assigned an advising time on Day Two. The time and location will be printed on the nametag received during check-in on Day One. Students must come at their assigned time; accommodations cannot be made to the time or location printed on their nametag due to the large number of entering students.

While students are in the class registration session, the College of Engineering will host a concurrent session for families and guests.

International

International students will have a two-day orientation August 15-16. International General Engineering students will a mandatory class registration session on Day Two (August 16).

Students planning to attend the international student orientation must register through  Hokie Spa.

Students will receive additional details through the Cranwell International Center.

At orientation students receive will receive a wealth of information, and it is a lot to process. Therefore, after orientation, we recommend the following:

  2. Complete the following programs through Virginia Tech's online prevention portal (available July 28 - August 18)
    1. AlcoholEdu (first-year students only)
    2. DiviersityEdu (first-year students only)
    3. HAVEN-Understanding Sexual Assault Courses (first-year and transfer students)
  3. Review the materials you received at orientation
  4. Review the information packet (located below)
  5. Make schedule changes (if needed)*
  6. Ask questions
  7. Relax, enjoy the rest of summer

*It is highly recommended that students not make changes to the first-year engineering courses you have been placed in. There is a high campus-wide demand and limited seating in all of those courses, which is why students are pre-registered. If students drop a required course, the Department of Engineering Education cannot guarantee that the course can be added back to their schedule.

Please review the tabs below which provide additional resources for the topics covered at orientation.
