The College of Engineering offers 14 degree-granting engineering majors and 7 minors and accepts applications to declare an engineering major and/or minor three times per year (end of spring, end of summer, and end of fall).

Please review the Application Flowchart for clarification on which application to submit.

The requirements to declare an engineering major are outlined below. A Quick Reference Chart is also available to aid in understanding the change of major requirements as they relate to different student populations.

Students wishing to declare a non-engineering major or minor should review the Out of Engineering website for the steps and procedures necessary for their college of interest. 


Admitted Major: General Engineering

The steps below provide a guide for students admitted to General Engineering at Virginia Tech wishing to declare one of the 14 degree-granting engineering majors:


Step 1: 
Complete the change of major requirements.

Step 2: Review your unofficial transcript on Hokie Spa to verify completion of all required coursework.

Step 3: Review the engineering application availability (on the right side bar).

Step 4: Submit a change of major application through the Change of Major Application (Undergraduate) link on Hokie Spa.

 

Admitted Major: Non-Engineering

The steps below provide a guide for students admitted to a non-engineering major at Virginia Tech wishing to apply for an internal transfer to one of the 14 degree-granting engineering majors:

NOTE: Non-Engineering students are not able to declare General Engineering.

Step 1: Complete the change of major requirements (requirements are dependent on application term).

    1. Application Term: Spring 2017, Summer 2017, and Fall 2017
    2. Application Term: Spring 2018, Summer 2018, and Fall 2018

Step 2: Review your unofficial transcript on Hokie Spa to verify completion of all required coursework.

Step 3: Review the engineering application availability (on the right side bar).

Step 4: Submit a change of major application:

    1. To declare a primary major: Change of Major Application (Undergraduate) in Hokie Spa
    2. To add a secondary major: College of Engineering Secondary Major Application

Step 5: Complete the College of Engineering Internal Transfer essay questions.

Requirements and Policies

Degree-granting engineering majors accept applicants on a space-available basis.

  1. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA at the time of application.
  2. Applicants with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA at the time of application are guaranteed their first choice major.
  3. Applicants below a 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA at the time of application will be rank ordered according to GPA and placed in their first, second, or third choice based on space availability.

The steps below provide a guide for students in a degree-granting engineering major wishing to declare a different engineering major or add a secondary engineering major:

Step 2: Submit a change of major application:

    1. To declare a primary major: Change of Major Application (Undergraduate) in Hokie Spa
    2. To add a secondary major: College of Engineering Secondary Major Application

 

Available Minors

While the College of Engineering offers 7 minors, students may also consider minors offered throughout the university that may compliment their engineering degree. Explore Engineering suggests potential complementary minors by engineering major.

Submit a change of minor application through the College of Engineering Minor Application (you will not use the Change of Major Application in Hokie Spa for minors).

College of Engineering change of major decisions may be appealed using the College of Engineering Change of Major Appeals Petition. Appeals are for addressing unusual and extenuating circumstances that prevented students from meeting the requirements and/or being competitive for their intended engineering major.

Students wishing to submit a change of major appeal should follow this link to enroll in the COE Change of Major Appeal Canvas site. The appeal documents are located on, and must be submitted on, Canvas according to the deadlines below:
