Call for nominations: Academy of Distinguished Alumni in Engineering Education
The Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech, celebrating 20 years since its establishment in 2004, is excited to announce the launch of its Academy of Distinguished Alumni in Engineering Education. This honorary academy will recognize alumni who have a sustained portfolio of visible and impactful work in advancing engineering education. Membership of this academy will be open to qualified living alumni of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, including, but not limited to, alumni holding the Ph.D. in Engineering Education.
The purpose of the academy is to highlight contributions in engineering education that impact positively on students, faculty, and society, showcasing these individuals as exemplars of success and as beacons of inspiration. Recognizing these distinguished ambassadors will promote greater interaction between alumni and Engineering Education faculty, staff, and students. Inductees will be recognized at the annual departmental Advisory Board and Awards Reception, typically held in April each year.
The main criterion for induction to this academy is the following:
- A record of innovative work that advances the quality and impact of engineering education. This could include work in pedagogical or curriculum innovation as well as leadership and administration within educational institutions. It might alternatively include alumni working within industry who are working to advance partnerships which promote experiential learning opportunities for prospective and current engineering students.
Further criteria to be used in selecting inductees include:
- The longevity of the contribution and its impact and uptake beyond the immediate context for innovation.
- Leadership and mentoring of others.
- Service to the profession and/or to Virginia Tech.
Nominations will require a one-page statement for why the candidate meets these criteria. Additional documentation such as a CV, relevant website links and/or letters of recommendation, can be added but are not required. Self-nominations are considered. This year we are accepting nominations through March 15, 2025, and anticipate a strong cohort of inaugural inductees to join us in celebrating our 20th anniversary.
