Biography

Edward Berger is the deparment head for the Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech. He has worked on more than $12 million in federally funded projects for engineering education research. He has more than 60 journal publications spanning mechanical engineering and engineering education topics. Berger won a Commonwealth of Virginia statewide teaching award in 2008 for his integration of technology into undergraduate education. He recently served as a program officer at the National Science Foundation from August 2019 to December 2020 in the Engineering Directorate, Division of Engineering Education and Centers. He oversaw a $15 million annual budget for engineering education research and collaborated across the agency on programs including ERC, AI Institutes, and advanced manufacturing. Berger recently concluded a two-year term as the faculty representative to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, where he served as chair of the Academic Affairs and Quality Committee.
